Good afternoon ladies and gents,
I just wnated to shoot out a quick update about the happenings in Science for each grade level! First off, each grade has completed their tests (aside from a few individual students) and I must say the results were not bad, but always room for an improvement! Overall, I am pleased and I thank you guys for the effort and hope that it continues through the course of the school year!
Grade 6:
We have began our investigations of volcanoes! We began with an article about the recent volcanic eruption that took place in Indonesia and introduced what volcanoes are and the type of erutpions that can occur! Your homework was a word search with vocabulary words relevant to this material and defining the words on the back side of the same sheet of paper! Might be a good idea to review those words in case you see them again in the very near future! **hint hint**
You were also given a project that will be due on 12.3.10 about volcanoes and you were given the instruction along with a rubric for this project!
Grade 7:
We have began our studies of circulation and respiration and most of the things in between! We are starting in the cardiovascular system. We have been introduced to the heart, what it is, why it is so important, the major functions of it! Nice job on last night's homework assignments, your short stories were pretty good and I enjoyed hearing them! Today your homework was designed to be a little more playful and hopefully a little more fun for you guys! You were supposed to create a "valentine's day" card that you would be giving to your own heart thanking it and expressing your love for it and telling it why you were so thankful for it! You were also supposed to find out why the <3 heart is so widely used instead of a picture of a real heart and where this design came from. You also had an extra credit assignment if you chose to do it (NOTE: I will not repost that, because it's extra credit, if you want it, you should've written it down).
Grade 8:
I did not have you guys today, but this week when have began discussing chemical bonds as an extension of the Periodic Table of Elements. You guys had the electron trading card assignment that will be due tomorrow, along with the bonding basics worksheets.

I just wanted to remind each grade that they will be having an exam tomorrow in Science class! Based on our in class reviews I feel like you guys are pretty well prepared for the exams! Now the only thing left to do is knock them out of the park tomorrow! Goodluck to each of you! Make me proud!

First off let me say that I CAN'T believe that it is already November! My how time flies (when you're having fun?!?!?!)..
Now on to bigger (& better) things!
EACH grade will have a test on Friday of this week (11.5.10) and should be actively studying bits of information each night rather than trying to cram it all it the night before the test, because I am aware that each grade will also have a math test during the week as well. Let's get it done men!
As far as Science is concerned, each grade compelted a vocabulary activity in class that should help refresh your minds on some of the information discussed during the units in which you will be tested on. So you have PLENTY of resources to use as study material for the upcoming exam, please put them to good use!

Good afternoon gents,
I don't have much to report today, just wanted to give a quick update about homework for each grade! With that said, here we go as follows:
Grade 6:
This afternoon we continued discussing tsunamis to help develop a further understanding of the recent disaster that took place in Indonesia that should assist you in your newspaper story that is due and will be presented in class on Friday. You also have some BrainPop activities and vocabulary to complete as a part of your homework to help tie all of this information together and to serve as a reference for future assignments.
Grade 7:
You guys were able to watch TWO BrainPop videos this morning that were based on the concepts of development associated with human reproduction. You guys did a good job with this information and have really been doing a solid job over the past two weeks as an entire grouup, keep that up! You were given some BrainPop activities to help reinforce the content of the videos and keep in mind that you have "Life as a Fetus" short story due on Friday, as well as your brochure for stages of development after the point of birth.
Grade 8:
You guys will continue working with The Periodic Table of Elements information and the creation of a replica of the chart that will indiciate the number of electrons in each energy level of the element itself. Please keep in mind that you guys will need to have your element cubes ready to go for Friday as you guys will present them in class.
Also EACH grade should begin reviewing information for an assessment over the course of the next week (probably Friday for each grade).

Good afternoon to the lovely followers of ADayintheLifeofSmalls!
Just wanted to give a few quick updates since I hadn't had a post in a few days!
First off, I wanted to give a big kudos to each and every one of the students who were able to attend the field trip in Raleigh yesterday, I thought your behavior was awesome and I feel like you all truly enjoyed yourselves, both from an educational standpoint and a social standpoint. It was a well needed trip, and I thought we had good success with the trip! Thank you guys!
Now, I wanted to put a quick reminder for those of you who are not sure what your homework is for me:
Grade 6: You guys have some follow up questions for the articles that we read aloud during class about tsunamis. We will continue to discuss them in class tomorrow as well as review your questions from today. Also, you guys should continue working on your newspaper article about the recent tsunami in Indonesia; causes, effects, what you would do if you were living there, and what is likely to happen in the future. Also keep in mind that we will likely be having an exam next Friday about the information we have been covering on earthquakes.
Grade 7: Busy week for you guys trying to squeeze quite a few things in that we ordinally might have spent more time on with our investigations of reproduction. You guys had a note guide that most of you completed during class time (otherwise you will have during homework help, i'm certain). Additionally, you were supposed to work on your stages of pregnancy timeline about the development from fertilization through the point of birth that is also due tomorrow. Lastly, you guys need to continue working on your brochures about development after birth through adulthood with a brief description of each phase.
Grade 8: I did not have you guys today, but we are still working on the periodic table and you guys should keep in mind that your element cube project is due on Friday. A few people have asked about me submitting the rubric on the blog for that project and I will work on doing so, although it may be in a different post, and most of you should have them in your possession anyway.

T.G.I.T.
Hello all,
So although it is NOT Friday, per se, it is the last day of the week to have students for the week, therefore we are each gonna celebrate T.G.I.T. :) As for tomorrow, the teachers and other staff will be spending some time with the parents to inform them of their child's progress thus far this school year!
Also, today we are going to the Lemur Center at Duke and have heard that it will be a very interesting trip for these young men, as well as the staff who will accompany them on this short trip! The kids did a GREAT job at the Nasher Museum yesterday and we hope that this trend will carry over into our trip this morning!

Hello again out there in blog land! First off, I know i'm still slacking a little bit, but I am trying to get better and turn posting on my blog daily into a habit to keep you all better informed on what will be going on in Science class and at DNS in general. With that said, below you may find some helpful information as we move through this week!
Grade 8:
You all need to complete the reinforcement sheet that will help you further understand how the elements on the periodic table are grouped and should serve as a good reference for any assessments or projects you will recieve based on this material.
You each also will continue working on your "Element Cube" project, each of you have the correct instructions for what your "cube" should have listed on it. If you need them again, please let me know ASAP and I can give you another copy or try to post them on the blog! Keep in mind that the cubes are due along with a presentation of the cube next Friday, 10/29/10!
Grade 7:
While you're still discussing some of the principles of reproduction in both animals and in humans, you will continue these studies and also begin futher investigation into the process by which twins are born. Your homework will be information associated with the development of twins that you were given during class.
Grade 6:
You guys will not have me anymore this week due to our field experience at the Nasher Museum at Duke along with parent conferences on Friday :) (hope you have good things to be reported to the family units)! You are still completing your studies of Earthquakes and will soon be wrapping that up and you should be expecting an exam on this material in the upcoming weeks (most likely the week AFTER next). Most recently your investigations have been about Earthquake hazards, gap hypothesis, and seismic gaps to help with the prediction of upcoming earthquakes. I won't really get to see you guys in class again until next Tuesday so make sure you review some of your material prior to coming back to class that day to stay current with the information we have covered.
Pretty exciting next few days coming up here at DNS, 3 field experiences in as many school days, plus the distribution of the first report cards of the school year to parents at conferences on Friday!

Students, most of you should know what you need to have completed going into next week! Good day all!
Today has been a strong day for the classes I have had thus far and homework for each grade respectfully is as follows:
Grade 8: Continue working on atomic model project that is DUE Thursday (this week)! Additionally, you need to continue your reference worksheet for the information about the periodic table of elements!
Grade 7: You should have mostly completed the homework you had for the day during the alloted time of the class period designated to do so and therefore your homework should be to review material discussed in class about reproduction.
Grade 6: You will continue your investigation of earthquakes (focusing on earthquake measurement) and will continue working with the Richter Scale and the Mercalli scale! Your homework will consist of a directed reading note guide reference sheet for this information, which should serve as a great reference for any upcoming assesment and/or projects!

DNS!
Hello DNS! I am going to make a conscious effort to get better about using the blog to keep everyone in the loop about things going on at DNS! Today is Thursday 9/30/2010 and I am starting this blog from scratch (I removed everything and started over). 8th grade is the only class I have this morning and as of right now they will not have homework due to service learning this afternoon along with no homework help!
